Wind and waves

Really good conditions for kiting and surfing the last days. Waves in the morning so you can start the day with a nice surf, rest a bit and then go for a little kitesession. It has been quite windy the last weeks in the afternoons which made our kiteguests pretty happy. Unfortunately the surf hasn´t been that good for advanced surfers but the next North swell has just arrived and February and March are usually the best monthes with clean and bigger waves.

Beautiful countryside

We all love the beach life here in Cabarete but sometimes it is really nice to leave the coastline and head into the land. The road via Mocca to Santiago has some great views over the mountains and you pass some lovley little villages where they hardly see tourists. The street itself is not in the best condition but if you drive a bit careful it is worth going that way. The Dominican Republic has many beauties to discover. Enjoy!

Winter season kick off - Playa Encuentro

What a week here in Cabarete. 2 swells after another hit the north coast of the Dominican Republic and delivered some really good waves to start a hopefully great winter season. After Coming back to the DR from a 4 month trip from Indo I was still a bit spoiled concerning the wave quality but those last days were just amazing and as good as the best day in Indo. From my point of view even much better as I didn’t have to hustle with those annoying crowds there. It started with really easy and perfect conditions. 4 -5 ft, super clean and lined up lefts and right with barrel opportunities before a little breeze came in around 2pm. The next day it got bigger and the swell really turned north so the three peaks in the middle of Playa Encuentro had a bit of a current and weren´t working as good anymore but the two advanced waves left and right from the peaks were peeling off perfect and only a handful guys were out. Some 6-8ft sets came through and again super clean conditions until the early afternoon. The day after it went a bit down to 5-6ft but coco pipe and the left were still working great. On Sunday then it got smaller and also a bit crowded again, good to get an easy surf and gain some energy back. Monday then the next swell hit and overnight the waves turned from 3ft up to 8-10 ft sets. All the peaks in the middle of the beach were closing out but we saw some amazing rights coming in at coco pipe.  Getting back out there was not much of a problem due to the high wave periode but it was a bit hard to catch those big ones as we didn´t want to sit too deep in case the cleanup sets come and the take offs were quite steep as well. We could get a couple of waves but in the end everyone took a beating and a couple of boards snapped so we decided to see how the next day will be. On tuesday morning it was less humiliating and perfect rights and lefts coming in at cocopipe and the left. Sunny, clean 6-8ft and again a handful guys out! I think I had some of the best surf ever this day and surfed for more than 3 hours. Today the swell went down to 3-4ft but still nice waves and also good to get some rest again. Can´t wait for the next swell to hit as this is just the beginning of the season! Have a look at our facebook profile if you want to see some of the action. Good old Cabarete

Coming back to Cabarete after 6 months really felt great.  Not much has changed and from day one I could feel the laidback lifestyle again which gives you that touch of lightheartedness. A lot of European´s miss that in their lives and tourists always enjoy that during their stay.

Being in Bali, one of the most visited and attractive tourist destinations, made me think “what is so much better there then for example here in Cabarete”.  “Why is everyone flying to a place where resources and infrastructure can´t even handle those amounts of tourists anymore?” You can already see that heavy impact on the nature and you better get used to plastic trash, dump from the big resorts or swarms of jelly fish if you want to surf there. Of course Bali has its epic and perfect waves for all the surf pros or those who wanna be surf pros and obviously half Australia is there in the high season as it is not far away from them. But what about all those beginners and intermediate surfers in the surf camps? Why are they trying to get a piece of the cake (without success) there? Why do they choose a destination where half of the surf world is sitting in the lineups? Just because Bali sounds so nice and you can get the newest Quicksilver short in the megastores in Kuta? Honestly let´s face the truth, they never get the good waves and all the other guys in the water are just getting angry because they think everyone who can´t do a 360 air shouldn’t even be here and is just in the way. Sure there are some beach breaks where the surf camps bring their students but those you can find anywhere in the world and way less crowded. If you are not in the water surfing with the crowds you will find yourself in one of the daily traffic jams on the highway getting heavily polluted. The surf camps shuttle their students to the different spots on the island and spend half of the day in the car in the traffic jams – but at least they got AC. Now seriously I am asking myself why do they enjoy that so much? Comparing that with my life here at Hooked in Cabarete everything is just so much more pleasant and enjoyable!  In the morning I walk 300m to the surf beach. No cars no traffic no pollution. I surf sometimes alone in Coco Pipe, here at encuentro and if I am lucky some friends come over and we share the waves - no hustling, no bad vibes, no fighting. If I want to go to town I just take a 5 minute ride and find great places to eat, nightlife, bars and even the newest Quicksilver surf short-). People come to Cabarete! It’s great here!
